making laundry soap...

when i was pregnant with cash i wasn't working and harley got cut off at the railroad. when he was put on the cut off board i believe he was guaranteed one work day a week and his pay was pretty much cut in half. i was watching a friend of ours baby and was getting paid for that as well. harley took up side jobs with a couple of guys he'd gotten to know at the rail road..thank heavens. harley had also got the promotion to yardmaster but, he would train for a few months and then have to wait until the guy he was going to be replacing retired. once i found out all this information i started panicking...how are we going to survive?? how are we going to make our house payment?? how are we going to deliver a baby if we lose our insurance?? panic. i started socking money away. i would google, yes google, how to live off nothing almost every night. i learned how to make homemade laundry soap. i learned how to make homemade house cleaners. i made homemade bread and tortillas almost every single day. the bread was really good...the tortillas not so much :) i learned how to recycle so many things in our home...we also went down to one vehicle for almost seven months...somehow we did survive. two days before i was going to be induced i got a phone call from one of the guys at the railroad asking if harley wanted to start back to work. you can imagine my relief and the big YES i screamed out!
...
i learned so many lessons during these months. i learned how little we actually need. how much we waste. how much we could actually do to scrape by and make it! i still make laundry soap and mix it with costcos kirkland brand to make it last a lot longer. i'll probably always do this because not only is it economical but, it reminds me of the time i had to do this out of survival...that and at any moment i could be back in that position again and not to take the things in life that i was for granted...i also learned how great harley is. how he just knew we would be fine and how he worked so hard to keep us afloat....
...
we have amazing friends as well. one friend in particular would listen to my worries and just make me laugh and look at the brighter side of the whole situation. i'll never forget one specific phone call where i was complaining about not being able to pay for anything except bills and she said to me: 'you so poor you can't even pay attentinon!' so funny. so true. i wish i had paid more attention to all the blessings during that time....so, a big thank you to lessons learned, friends, google and homemade laundry soap!

listen to the mynabirds...i am loving this band.
